Renewing materials

There are three ways to renew your library materials:

  • Call the Circulation Services Division at 757.259.7753.
  • Come to the check out desk at either library.
  • Use our online catalog (click on the My Account tab, enter your library card number, choose the Items Out link, select the items that you wish to renew by clicking in the box next to the title, and click the Renew button).

Placing holds

Using any computer with access to the Internet, you may request library materials be held for you and specify at which library you wish to pick them up when they become available. You will be notified by the method set in your library account. Here's how to place a hold:

  • Search the library catalog for the title you wish to request
  • Once you locate the title, click on it to pull up the title record
  • Click the Request Any Copy button to the lower right of the title information
  • Enter the barcode from your library card
  • Click Access Your Library Account
  • Select a pickup location from the pulldown box
  • Click the blue Request button

The confirmation screen indicates whether your request was successfully placed. Your position in the hold queue and pickup location are displayed. The method by which you will be notified is not specified. To verify how the library will contact you, call the Circulation Services Division at 757.259.7753.

Canceling holds

You may cancel requests you have made for library materials before items are available for you or after they are being held.

  • Go to the library catalog
  • Click the My Account tab
  • Enter the barcode from your library card
  • Click Access Your Library Account
  • Click Hold Requests on the Overview page
  • Check the box next to each filled or pending request you wish to cancel
  • Click the Cancel Request button above the bar

Suspending holds

You may suspend requests you have made for library materials until a specified future date. When requests are suspended, your name continues to rise in the queue but the hold will not be activated for you until after the date you specify. If you are unable to use materials during a particular period, suspension assures you do not lose your place in a lengthy queue.

  • Go to the library catalog
  • Click the My Account tab
  • Enter the barcode from your library card
  • Click Access Your Library Account
  • Click Hold Requests on the Overview page
  • Check the box next to each pending request you wish to suspend
  • From the date pulldown boxes above the bar, select the month, day and year you wish your request reactivated.
  • Click the Suspend request until button above the bar

Your request automatically reactivates after the suspend period.
